The library of the Josephinum, the episcopalian secondary school, traces its roots to the book collection of the Jesuits.
The Jesuits came to Hildesheim in 1590 to work against the reformation in the diocese. To achive this, they maintained schools and just a few years after arriving in Hildesheim the Jesuits took over the cathedral school, thus founding the Jesuit Mariano-Josephinum secondary school. A library with a wide range of source and teaching texts was essential for their work. The Jesuits built a universal yet theologically educational collection which survives to this day.
Nach der Auflösung des Ordens 1773 wurde das Gymnasium vom Bischof übernommen und existiert bis heute fort.
Durch die zeitweilige Verstaatlichung der Schule während des Nationalsozialismus gelangten die wertvollen Altbestände in die Dombibliothek; der größte Teil, etwa 13.000 Bände, überstand die schwierigen Bedingungen der Nachkriegszeit, allerdings in einem mehr oder minder prekären Erhaltungszustand.
Therefore, the Josephinum's library Die Josephiner-Bibliothek ist daher zu einem signifikanten Teil akut sicherungs- oder sogar restaurierungsbedürftig und durch den Verlust historischer Kataloge nur unzureichend erschlossen. Erst seit etwas mehr als einem Jahr werden die Bände systematisch erfasst, so dass aktuell etwa 2.000 Bände im OPAC der Dombibliothek recherchierbar sind. A project to catalogue and preserve all of the Josephinum's books is being developed.
